Can students use AI to write their thesis? Among the 49 universities with a document: 16 allow it with conditions, 8 forbid it unless the supervisor authorises it, 7 leave it to the individual supervisor, 1 forbid it unless the supervisor says otherwise, 1 forbid it outright, and 16 do not address the point. No Italian university allows it without conditions.
Every answer on this site is an editorial classification of a passage in an official document, and every classification is published next to the verbatim quotation, the reference, the document URL and the verification date, so that readers can check the reading rather than trust it. Data are open (CC BY 4.0): atenei.csv, atenei.json, codebook, llms-full.txt. About this project
IAUniversità is an observatory on the rules Italian universities set for the use of artificial intelligence. It is an independent personal project by Biagio De Risi (ORCID 0009-0006-2623-7542), with no funding, no advertising and no institutional sponsor. The curator works at one of the universities surveyed, Università di Napoli L’Orientale: the conflict of interest is declared, and that university is classified from its documents like every other. Classification is manual and done by one person; no independent re-coding has been carried out, so no inter-coder agreement figure exists yet. Corrections are published, never silently applied.
